May I Present to You…

The Criterion, where, in Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, it all began.

I got to attend a Sherlock Holmes Society meeting here on Sunday, where they unveiled this new plaque to replace a plaque that was stolen awhile back.

The new plaque says: This plaque commemorates the historic meeting early in 1881 at the original Criterion long bar of Dr. Stamford and Dr. John Watson which led to the introduction of Dr. Watson to Mr. Sherlock Holmes.

That’s very lovely, but I do prefer the words on a simpler plaque already there, that goes along the lines of at the Criterion Stamford “…met Dr. John Watson and led him to immortality and to Sherlock Holmes.”

There’s adventure and romance in those few words, don’t you think? A dashing great lot of adventure and romance.
